About the Faculty of Economics

The core of our success is the fulfillment of the motto:  Effectively Together.

Profile

The Faculty of Economics represents a significant educational and research institution that establishes an independent and creative environment supporting the knowledge of economic disciplines, the creation of innovations, and transfer and capitalization of knowledge based on the mutual cooperation of teachers, students, and representatives of the business sphere and public institutions from South Bohemia, the Czech Republic and from abroad. The Faculty emphasizes the development of modern forms of education, strengthening the practical skills of its graduates (project teaching, students’ involvement in science and research) and internationalization (study programs in English and joint programs with foreign universities). Prospective students are offered all three university study levels (Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral), both in the full-time and part-time forms within the majority of the offered study fields.

International Co-operation

International co-operation is, at the Faculty of Economics, perceived as one of the key activities enabling further development of students' competencies, deepening the pedagogical and expert experience of the academic staff, and involvement in international scientific and research structures. The most active co-operation is established with Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia, and the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. There are also close relationships with universities in Passau and Linz in the close border region of Germany and Austria. The Faculty of Economics co-operates also with the University of Missouri and Armstrong State University in the USA, the Université de Bretagne-Sud in France, the University of Primorska in Slovenia, and the University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau in Germany.

Science and Research at the Faculty of Economics

Scientific and research activities of the academic staff are oriented mainly on topics closely connected with economics, company management, and socio-economic factors of regional development. The main focus is on applied research in which economic problems in practice are solved in co-operation with significant regional companies and institutions using modern economic and mathematical methods and models. Environmental economics, resp. green economics and bioeconomics, are newly developed fields, which are perceived as a significant direction of innovative processes in the European Union.

History

The Faculty of Economics is a relatively new faculty. It was established in 2007 and follows the tradition of economic university education in České Budějovice, which has been developed there since the 1960s. Since its establishment, the Faculty of Economics has achieved many successes. In the field of science and research, the Faculty is considered to be one of the top regional economic universities and its graduates are in very great demand on the labor market.

The Present

The Faculty of Economics successfully develops activities leading to the deepening of the students' competencies by organizing lectures and presentations of significant experts from practice. Active students are enabled to shadow managers or they are offered internships in important companies. The Faculty also issues its own journal called EFektiv, providing space for presenting various activities taking place at the Faculty. The authors of the majority of the contributions are the students. We run our own shop, representing a practice environment for chosen students who are willing to develop their skills in the field of commerce and marketing. The Faculty of Economics also chooses a secondary school with whom to cooperate closely and bestows the title "Faculty of Economics Upper-Secondary School" upon it.  The first upper-secondary faculty school is the Business Academy in Písek.

Social Responsibility

The Faculty of Economics is the first faculty in the Czech Republic which obtained the status of a fair trade faculty. It is important to spread ideas about fair trade and social responsibility, not only in various specialized courses provided by the Faculty but also in the public field. It is fair trade which represents one way to educate future generations towards effective consumer behavior. We are aware of the environmental impacts of our behavior and we are also responsible regarding our society and its surroundings. Having modernized and reconstructed the main faculty building, we save a significant amount of carbon dioxide yearly which would otherwise be released into the air. This amount represents, for example, the production of energy necessary for the heating of homes and water and the electricity for 35 average households, or the yearly average car emissions of 282 people in the Region of South Bohemia.
